The earth is gulping down the water and making the farmers happy. Come down, O rain, and let this happiness spread everywhere .
The rain falls: this meteorological phenomenon, which brings sadness and irritation in wintry Europe, is a sign of life and a source of joy for the children of the Middle East. The rain falls is only one of the twelve Arabic songs for children that will be performed at the seventh annual concert of the Magic Lamp series organized by the Magnificat Institute. The concert will be held on Sunday, 10th April 2011, at 18:00, in the auditorium of the St. Saviour Monastery in Jerusalem s Old City.
The 2011 concert will be the culmination of the publication, teaching and performance of twelve songs for children, created by the deceased Palestinian composer Maroun Ashkar. Made available by his family, these songs form part of a collection of unpublished compositions that the composer used for teaching young children.
The songs will be performed by children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old, who will be accompanied by a small orchestra on pianoforte, violins, cellos and flutes. Joining the Magnificat, and especially its most junior choir, the Yasmeen Buds, will be other schools in Jerusalem, such as the Terra Sancta College for boys and the Terra Sancta College for girls. The pupils of these schools will enrich the tuneful evening not only with their voices, but also by performing short scenes related to the themes of the songs. The music teacher Hani Kreitam is directing this production.
The Magic Lantern is not only a concert performance; it is also a prestigious initiative of the Magnificat Institute of Jerusalem that includes every stage of artistic activity, on both didactic and productive levels. It involves the research, harmonization, production, publication, teaching, performance and promotion of unpublished songs, both traditional and new, from the Palestinian-Arabic musical repertoire for children. It is a response to the need of schools for teaching materials, both musical scores and songs, for use in class.
The first stage is research on texts and melodies that have never been published and may be in need new arrangements. From the simple melodic line, this proceeds to the harmonical composition and the accompaniment. The script must then be entered into the computer, which is not such a simple task since the Arabic text is read from right to left, and music is normally written from left to right: a work of unification is therefore needed. As soon as the computerized version is ready, the musical scores must be printed and sent to the teachers, who will use this material, in the schools, to teach the children participating in the Magic Lamp concert. In the meantime, a book of all the songs needs to be published and distributed freely to all schools and teachers.
This year, on top of everything else, there is a great novelty: the songs of the Magic Lamp will be recorded on a CD that will be attached to the book of songs which will be published. In this way, the songs can also be learnt and sung in those schools that do not have a music teacher or any possibility of producing an accompaniment. A record of the event will also be made by means of a video recording.
This year the development and expansion of the Magic Lamp project has been made possible through the support of the Italian Cooperation for Development (AVSI), which has provided a grant of 9,430 Euros for the Magic Lamp. The project is therefore financed by the Italian Ministry of External Affairs (project Support the emergency of education in the Palestinian Territories. Bethlehem, Jericho and East Jerusalem MAE 9226/AVSI/TOC).
