Spring concerts at the Magnificat
For the past 6 consecutive years, the Magnificat Institute has welcomed the arrival of the spring with a touring festival, the MOM Magnificat Open Music. As the name suggests, MOM was an opportunity for the music school of the Custody to “open itself” to the city of Jerusalem and its different communities. The MOM, in fact, took place outside of the Monastery of St. Saviour, the site of the Institute.
This year, the management of the school has decided to reenergize the festival by giving it a new name: “Ayyar”, an Arabic word that stands for spring. Of the MOM, Ayyar keeps the calendar (because it takes place on the Thursdays of May) and the itinerant nature. This first edition of the festival was presented at the Church of the Redeemer in the heart of the Old City; at the Cathedral of St. George, the center of the Anglicanism in Jerusalem and at the Immaculatæ Auditorium of St. Saviour.
Every week the best students of the Magnificat performed accompanied by their professors. All the instruments taught at the school were present on stage: voice, oboe, trumpet, violin, viola, cello, percussions, organ, guitar, flute…Also, the two orchestras of the Magnificat—the Chamber and the Buds—and the ensembles had a chance to play. More, the festival featured international guests like the cellist Ofer Canetti.
Introduced by the director of the Magnificat, Fr. Alberto J. Pari, the concerts were very well received by an audience made of parents, friends, pilgrims, and tourists attracted by the good music.
It was a promising first edition and, while the second one is in the making, we wish a long and glorious life to the Ayyar Festival!
